Jóhann Jóhannsson - And In The Endless Pause There Came The Sound Of Bees
[NTOV, 2009]
Sometimes it seems that the history of music takes steps back. After numerous heavily armed arrangements and hi-tech clicks and clacks, you seek shelter in old genres, up to classics. And often this desire leads you not to Chopin or Rakhmaninov, and even not Shnitke (though sometimes you get these kinds of mood too), but to “modern classic.” It’s written nowadays. The dust hasn’t settled on the new album by the icelandic composer Johann Johannsson - just what’s needed to cool off.
After albums where Johannsson experimented with classic and electronic music, this album seems to be pure classical music at first. But then you start noticing wires behind these softest strings and pungent pianos. Nevertheless, the music is perceived as pure classical. This is actually a soundtrack for Varmints movie, which I haven’t seen. But the sounds alone seem to be enough to start drawing pictures in your mind. And somewhere in-between you can imagine yourself some hints of Prague - that’s where the orchestra was recorded.
