Apostle of Hustle - Eats Darkness
Apostle of Hustle - Eats Darkness
[Arts & Crafts, 2009]
There’s always something interesting going on in and around Broken Social Scene. Andrew Whiteman, one of the “old guys”, has mostly been associated with Apostle of Hustle (the band was formed in 2001), but he’s also been a significant part of BSS. Apostle of Hustle’s third full LP is an outstanding piece in the 2009 music collection. Sounds of Latin-American folk on the one hand, indie rock at its best in terms of loudness and crossing all borders - on the other. I really like the intro, Snakes:
Incredible fact about snakes is they got both boy and girl reproductive parts. That’s why a person can’t be trusted, you say they’re a snake. Who could trust a bitch that could literally go fuck herself?
A lot of guitars on the album, a lot of drums and percussion and hats. There’s something to feed every need: the rhythm that’s burning the earth, pieces of advice in the lyrics: “keep friends close, enemies closer.” Militaristic mood is held by the interludes - Snakes, Sign, and occasional gunshots inside several tracks.
Eazy Speaks can be places in the classics at once. Soul Unwind is driving at full speed. Perfect Fit is a hypnotic echo vocal and percussion. Xerses is a melodically great song, rushing forward like the album in general. And even the last track, Blackberry, is a pearl in itself - as always, the lyrics and the melody make a perfect match. Highly recommended.
