Saroos in Kiev - Apr 23

In the meanwhile… I almost forgot to mention! (But I didn’t)

Thursday, April 23rd, three guys are coming to Kiev, Ukraine: Christoph Brandner, Max Punktezahl and Florian Zimmer, and on Thursday night they are going to be playing in Xlib club - of course, as Saroos!

Misha Shkurat, who set this all up, already wrote about it and interviewed the band (both in Russian). I’ll just post the links to two wonderful songs, and say that if you’re in Kiev this Thursday, you know what to do! I’m going to stop my illness by that time.

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Out Of Noise

Ryuichi Sakamoto - Out of Noise
[Commmons, 2009]

Ok, so I’ve been having a pretty bad flu, absolutely improper for writing anything. Even the music from the outside seemed to be bumping into an unbreakable wall around me… Anyway, I’m getting back to normal and start listening - or re-listening, as with this one.

Ryuichi Sakamoto needs no special introduction, he’s just a magician. Right now his new album Out Of Noise is healing me. Beautiful in their monotony keyboards, pendent strings, absolute elusiveness. The sounding brings to mind rain in Tokyo - even though I’ve never been to Tokyo. It’s a subtle, gentle atmosphere that’s so easy to break, but oh so beautiful in its fragility. Starting from the tenderest Hibari, through to melting Hwit, mysterious Still Life, foggy In The Red… And then alarming cicadas of the Tama, cinematographic Nostalgia, rainy Ice… Overall, the whole soundtrack would be good to put to a film. Or to make a soundtrack of your life - at least for a night.

B.Fleischmann - Not Given Lightly (Chris Knox)

While I don’t have any time to write at full length, at least I’m listening - to tons of music. Hope to write soon about Boxcutter, Camera Obscura, La Bien Querida and “everything else”. For now, a song that really touched me.

It’s a title track from Morr Music’s compilation “Not Given Lightly”, B.Fleischmann’s cover on Chris Knox. The whole VA is “A Tribute To the Giant Golden Book Of New Zealand’s Alternative Music Scene”, a really great thing. It would require a separate mention.

Lady Sovereign - Jigsaw

Lady Sovereign - Jigsaw
[Midget Records, 2009]

There are albums that are like toys – bright, funny, and, most importantly, new. With this latter feature disappearing with time, you put them away somewhere and forget, again, like with toys. But while they are still fresh, they get all your attention. Such analogy came to mind in regard to the sophomore album of “the biggest midget on stage”, British rapper Lady Sovereign. Easy to recognize rap, electro rhythms, grime boiling in blood. Not for long listens – it’s not M.I.A. – not so exotic and, honestly, not as interesting, or maybe I just can’t stand long spans of rap… Anyway, it’s good for several days, up to a week. The album is much more mature than the debut – it was just a phenomenon back then, dragging attention, but here it’s more of the music itself. Let’s Be Mates is what you start with and what keeps you listening to its computer rhythms. It starts to get really interesting with So Human – cover of “Close To Me” by the Cure – because of the original song too, but also because the new version is good. There’s a risk to stop right there, but if you go further, you’ll find some other good stuff too. I Got You Dancing, Guitar, Bang Bang… To be honest, though, I hardly get to the end of the album – probably rap is not entirely my cup of tea. But the toy is still good.
