Lady Sovereign - Jigsaw
[Midget Records, 2009]
There are albums that are like toys – bright, funny, and, most importantly, new. With this latter feature disappearing with time, you put them away somewhere and forget, again, like with toys. But while they are still fresh, they get all your attention. Such analogy came to mind in regard to the sophomore album of “the biggest midget on stage”, British rapper Lady Sovereign. Easy to recognize rap, electro rhythms, grime boiling in blood. Not for long listens – it’s not M.I.A. – not so exotic and, honestly, not as interesting, or maybe I just can’t stand long spans of rap… Anyway, it’s good for several days, up to a week. The album is much more mature than the debut – it was just a phenomenon back then, dragging attention, but here it’s more of the music itself. Let’s Be Mates is what you start with and what keeps you listening to its computer rhythms. It starts to get really interesting with So Human – cover of “Close To Me” by the Cure – because of the original song too, but also because the new version is good. There’s a risk to stop right there, but if you go further, you’ll find some other good stuff too. I Got You Dancing, Guitar, Bang Bang… To be honest, though, I hardly get to the end of the album – probably rap is not entirely my cup of tea. But the toy is still good.
